Gateway Market Cafe

We've been shopping at the Gateway Market in Des Moines since they opened a few years ago. Their selection of locally made and specialty products is spectacular. We're planning a post on the market for the near future, but for today, it's all about the Market Cafe.

The Gateway Market Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and the variety of menu items is huge. Quiche, omelets, eggs benedict, even Huevos Rancheros for breakfast. Soups, salads, sandwiches and speciality items like pasta and the House Ramen for lunch or dinner. They even feature a happy hour Monday - Friday from 4:30pm - 6:30pm with $3 house wine and $2 beer selections. With an order of Roasted Red Pepper Hummus or Spinach Artichoke Dip, you've got the perfect way to unwind after a tough day on the job.

We visited the Gateway Market Cafe for lunch and so, it seemed, did everyone else in Des Moines. But even with long lines, the friendly and efficient staff keeps everything moving along and we were enjoying our lunch fairly quickly for such a busy day.

Grant went with The 'Original' Sloppy Joe. Shaved Boar's Head pastrami topped with creamy coleslaw, swiss cheese, Boar's Head horseradish mustard, and thousand island dressing on toasted South Union rye. A big fan of good pastrami, he was very pleased.

I'd heard that the burgers at the Gateway feature some very special grinds. I'm a burger fanatic so I was excited to try the Gateway Burger. The menu said it was 'George's grind of brisket and chuck' served with your choice of cheese on a toasted South Union bun, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonaise and a pickle. It was defintely up there with the best burgers I've ever eaten. I'm usually a slather ketchup and extra mayo on burgers kind of gal, but one taste of this burger and I didn't add a thing. I ate the whole thing exactly as it came out of the kitchen. Every. Single. Bite. OK, I gave Grant one bite, but only because I wanted him to see what he was missing.

We also shared an order of french fries. They weren't as crispy as we like, but the potato flavor was very good. And how can you have a burger without fries?

Overall, a delicious and satisfying lunch. We've already picked out additional menu items we really want to try, so a return visit is a no brainer. Top quality preparation, innovative menu selections, it all comes together at the Gateway Market Cafe.

Don't forget to let us know about your favorites at the Gateway Market Cafe!
