Zombie Burger + Drink Lab

I must admit, we're a little late to the Zombie Burger party, but at least we finally made it in to try a burger! Located at 300 E. Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines, Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is quite the unique dining experience.

We've tried to eat here a couple of times before, but it's been super busy (which I hear is the norm) and we either didn't have time to wait or my patience was not working that day (which can also be the norm). This time, we were seated within 5 minutes and had plenty of time to take a look around. What a cool space! Even though I'm not a zombie aficianado, the decor is quite amusing.

We ordered our normal Miller Lite's, but wow, look at the size of this beer menu! Very impressive.

And the food menu is just as awesome. The variety of burgers is amazing - I love that you have a choice of the special grind beef, a chicken breast, a couple of veggie burger choices, or a portobello mushroom as your 'patty.' So many toppings and combinations of stuff to pile on your burger! Seriously, you just need to go here to check out their menu. Too much to write down!

Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I decided to try a single special grind with cheese and bacon. It's my go-to burger and I wanted to be able to really taste the beef. Big winner here! - I only got a single, but it was plenty - juicy and perfectly seared - I love 'smashed' burgers. And the bacon was sooo good.

Grant went with the Zombie burger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Zombie sauce. Nice fresh veggies, the sauce was very tasty, and he was really raving about the bun. He's kind of a freak on hamburger buns. He hates squishy buns, and said this one was great.

We also shared a basket of the house-cut fries. Loved the fry sauce. These were excellent fries - crispy and full of potato flavor. Big thumbs up.

We didn't try any of the spiked milk shakes, but we'll definitely be back. Service on this busy night was also fantastic - they really seem to have the groove down with efficient employees, which is great to see. Now that I know the burger itself is awesome, I can't wait to try one of the 'topped' burgers - but how do you pick just one?!

Zombie Burger + Drink Lab features both a quick service counter on one side and full-service dining on the other. Great option when it's busy at both lunch and dinner. We're planning on hitting them up during an off peak time to try even more zombie goodness. Definitely give this place a try.
